Overview of migraine and novel approach in its treatment

Abstract

Migraine is headache occurring only in one side at a time which is extremely painful and many times associated with nausea and vomiting. Exact cause of migraine is still not known but lot of research is going on to identify mechanism of this disease and various novel drugs, diagnostic tests and drug delivery systems. Drugs from natural origin and its potential effect in treatment of migraine as well as drugs from traditional Indian system of medicines is also becoming new important aspect in treatment of migraine. This review article gives an overview about basic pathophysiology, different types of migraine and their symptoms as well as various antimigraine treatments available so far. Worldwide 15% of total population more has various side effects and not all patients responded to the treatment. Frequency of attacks may increase due to overuse of acute headache medications like NSAIDS it results into conversion of acute migraine into chronic migraine. Hence it was important to discover potential targets and novel approach in treatment of migraine. Commonly affects women 19% than men 11%. Migraine most commonly begins from age 15-24 years of age. By globally burden of disease study it was the third highest prevalent neurological disability. Novel therapies like humanized antibodies, targeted 5-HT1F therapies are some of the recent developments in synthetic drugs. As we know since from thousands of years plants with medicinal properties are important for treatment of various diseases in humans as well as animals. Herbal medicines are now in demand as research is going on. Some of the phytochemicals of some plants are important in treatment of migraine as well as advancement in diagnosis also. We will take review of these potential targets, clinical research, diagnostic tests, phytochemicals, ayurvedic knowledge and novel drug delivery system for conventional drugs.
